World Water Day is held on 22 March each year. The United Nations General Assembly designated the date in 1992, and the first observance followed in 1993. UN-Water coordinates an annual campaign and a theme that should be checked before sharing.

Water connects daily life and public systems

Drinking, cooking, hygiene, farming, industry and ecosystems all depend on freshwater. Access is shaped by infrastructure, affordability, pollution, climate and governance. The UN’s World Water Day factsheet places the observance within the goal of water and sanitation for all.

A reminder is not a substitute for action

Turning off a tap can reduce household waste, but global water challenges also require maintained public systems and accountable institutions. Avoid implying that people without safe water simply need better personal habits.
