United Nations Day is observed on 24 October. On that date in 1945, the UN Charter entered into force after the required ratifications, and the United Nations officially came into existence.
The signing and the founding were different dates
Representatives of fifty countries signed the Charter in San Francisco on 26 June 1945. The organization began four months later, when the ratification requirement was met. The UN’s official history explains why 24 October became the anniversary.
Cooperation is work, not ceremony
The Charter established institutions through which states address peace and security, human rights, international law and social progress. The organization’s record includes major achievements, failures and continuing disputes. Marking its birthday should leave room to examine all three.
Follow one issue through the system
Choose a subject such as refugees, health, climate, food or peacekeeping. Identify which UN body handles it, what authority that body has, how it is funded and where independent scrutiny can be found. This is more useful than treating “the UN” as one voice.
Save 24 October in Daytely as a custom date with one part of the Charter or institution to explore next year.
