International Youth Day: making room for young voices

Observed on 12 August, International Youth Day asks institutions and communities to treat young people as participants in the present.

International Youth Day is observed on 12 August. The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the date in 1999 after a recommendation from the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. Each year brings a theme, but participation remains central.

Young people are part of today

It is easy to describe youth only as future leaders. That overlooks their current work, ideas, responsibilities and rights. The UN’s background to International Youth Day connects the observance to sustained attention on issues affecting young people.

Invitation is not the same as influence

A youth panel means little if decisions are already fixed. Meaningful participation provides accessible information, time to prepare, fair compensation where appropriate, and a clear account of how input changed the result. Adults must also avoid asking one young person to represent an entire generation.

Make room close to home

Ask a young person what they want adults to understand, then listen without turning the conversation into advice. Organizations can review whether meeting times, language, transport and costs prevent participation. Support youth-led groups on the terms they set.

Save 12 August as a Daytely custom date and attach one question: whose voice is missing from this decision?
