International Museum Day is organized on or around 18 May. The International Council of Museums established it in 1977, with the first edition held in 1978. Participating museums interpret a different theme each year.
Museums do more than display objects
Museums research, conserve, interpret and teach. They can connect people with art, science, memory and place, but they also make choices about whose knowledge is collected and how it is described. ICOM’s official page links the day to cultural exchange and understanding.
Look behind the label
Ask how an object entered the collection, whose voice explains it and whether descendant or source communities shaped the display. Restitution, repatriation, accessibility and conservation are living questions, not details outside the visitor experience.
Plan a curious visit
Choose a local museum, historic site or community archive. Check access information and current hours, then spend time with one object instead of rushing through every room. If admission is free, consider donating or supporting a public program.
Add 18 May as a Daytely custom date, with a different collection or behind-the-scenes question for each year.
