Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on 5 August 1930. He worked as a naval aviator, aeronautical engineer and research pilot before NASA selected him as an astronaut in 1962.

Two dates tell different parts of the story

Armstrong’s birthday is 5 August. The Apollo 11 lunar module landed on 20 July 1969 in US time, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon. NASA’s biography also records his earlier Gemini 8 mission and extensive test-pilot work.

No one reached the Moon alone

Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface with Armstrong while Michael Collins piloted the command module in lunar orbit. Thousands of engineers, technicians, mathematicians, contractors and support staff made the mission possible. Remembering the system behind the milestone gives the achievement its true scale.

Keep the calendar precise

Time zones mean some audiences remember the first step as 21 July. When saving a historic event, note what happened, the source and the time standard. That small detail prevents an apparent contradiction.

Add 5 August as a Daytely birthday and 20 July as a custom date, each with its own meaning.
