To add days to a date, move forward by the required number of calendar days; to subtract, move backward. The starting date is normally day zero. A date calculator is the easiest reliable method when the range crosses months, years or 29 February.

Use a consistent convention

Adding one day to 20 May gives 21 May. Subtracting one day gives 19 May. This sounds obvious, but confusion begins when a process calls its starting date “day one.” Record whether your source uses elapsed or inclusive counting.

Cross boundaries without shortcuts

If you add ten days near the end of a month, count the remaining days in that month and continue into the next. Do the same at 31 December. Avoid assuming every month has 30 days, especially for longer intervals.

Let the calculator check the calendar

Use Daytely’s add or subtract tool for the result, then compare it with the wording of the rule you are following. For official, medical, legal or financial dates, confirm the final deadline with the responsible organisation.

Turn the answer into a next step

A calculated date becomes useful when it carries an action. Save “Send documents,” “Review progress” or “Book follow-up,” and set notice far enough ahead to complete the task calmly.

Questions people ask

What happens when the target month is shorter?

Day-based calculation continues through the real number of days in each month.

Can I subtract a negative number?

That is mathematically the same as adding, but choosing a clear Add or Subtract option is less error-prone.
